SE "Makeevugol intends to use methane gas from coal deposits as an alternative fuel

2010-06-12

The project was developed, researched by "Energometan" association  together with scientists from the Institute of Rock Mechanics, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. New technology has already been tested at Ukrainian mines, reported the press service of the Ministry of Coal Policy. The introduction of the new project will help improve safety, as well as to provide an opportunity to use methane instead of natural gas as alternative fuel. The project will include drilling boreholes, the projected mine degasification, reconstruction and commissioning of the new vacuum-pumping stations, drilling of the upper degassing wells as an additional factor in the effectiveness of decontamination, the improvement of parameters of technology and technology of drilling underground degasification wells. Scientists estimate that a system of holding and processing of methane will provide an opportunity to produce 200 million kW of electricity and more than 150 thousand gigacalories of heat every year. Also, this will enable State Enterprise Makeevugol to annually receive more than 8 million euros of additional revenue under the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges countries that acceded to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
